With a few exceptions any type of public transportation that depends on rails and a fixed route are a bad idea. They can't respond to changing needs or emergencies effectively and if one breaks down the entire system comes to a grinding halt! Obviously there are some examples where streetcars and/or subways work very well but those systems are huge and have ways to bypass problem areas, something that wouldn't exist in any systems that are being proposed for Louisville.

The upfront costs are also ridiculously high for the benefit that will be received. How many people would actually use the market Street route on a regular basis? I'm guessing the number would be quite low. If you add the startup costs and the annual operating costs together there is no business in existence that would make the investment! It just makes no economic sense.

If you want another example just look at Walt Disney World. Instead of expanding their monorail system to transfer the ever-growing number of visitors they are now using a huge fleet of buses. The buses have much more flexibility and are cheaper to purchase and operate. Why does anybody think that the economics for Louisville to go to streetcars makes any sense?

We need to quit having these fantasies and start looking at realities!Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02186768781626925015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707026140839237062.post-65141871270700673202014-10-14T01:41:36.455-04:002014-10-14T01:41:36.455-04:00For a great party or event, I suggest contacting a...For a great party or event, I suggest contacting a reliable event agency. Meanwhile, in Shawnee, they're literally telling the people what's best for them. The fact that they're dictating how the land may be used (although OWNED by the city, it's MAINTAINED by the community) without neighborhood feedback is pretty sick. It's the most condescending thing I've ever seen.

Also, the fact they're shoving a Wal-Mart down West Louisville's throat - without any transparency - meanwhile losing their minds at the possibility of a Dollar General being built in Phoenix Hill (NuLu) is definitely hypocritical. Now NuLu is seeking to become a preservation district that rejects any chain store that would de-value the property in the area... yet Shawnee and Russell (waaay older than Phoenix Hill and Butchertown) are being forced to accept a low-wage, anti-union supercenter on the city's terms. Makes me absolutely sick.

This was just released a few days ago. http://insiderlouisville.com/news/2014/03/12/nulu-3/

Fischer has go to go. Your ide...I just stumbled on this blog and love it. Your ideas are articulate and reasonable. Coincidentally I am something of an artist. It is why I stumbled on your blog. I am a photographer (old school film) and require more than a small corner of an apartment to develop and print images, i.e. darkroom with water source and space for several pieces of large photographic enlargers as well as space to spread out work for visual analysis and further processing, etc. Problem is, what Louisville calls an artist loft is usually a tiny box with industrial walls and exsposed vents that comes at a hefty price. I apologize, I digressed. What I'm getting at is I've long appreciated the West End for the old warehouses as well as large homes, (I am in love with the sadly decaying Ouerbaker House but certainly don't have the funds to renovate it.) I'm looking for a warehouse space that can be used as an apartment as well as a studio for my work. I just assumed with all the empty warehouse space, that would be a readily available option, but so far I've found nothing. It seems no space there is available for my needs which makes no sense.I wish I was at a point where I could purchase property (that would solve my space problems) but financially I am not. I make a living as a postal worker, photography is what I do because I love it. So even I don't exactly fit the proposal you've made. In any case, if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Until then, keep up the great work and I look forward to reading more from you.
(I apologize, I've let my blog lapse so I selected anonymous to post as but my name is Steven Willis)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707026140839237062.post-3017474891881777252013-07-03T08:53:41.415-04:002013-07-03T08:53:41.415-04:00Good ideas Haven for organic growth of the city.

Too many areas get overlooked and the gov't is tone deaf to the concerns of the average Louisvillian. As it stands now, we have 26 people who decide what is best for 700,000 people in gerrymandered districts. Neighborhood boundaries rarely change, if ever. Each hood should have street level representation made up of actual residents. The people living in and around this 30 acre project should ultimately have the final say in what happens there.
